  1.                  SideBar 1.0 for Microsoft Windows

  4.         Quarterdecks' SideBar for Windows offers an object oriented
  5. desktop for Windows 3.10, Windows 3.11 and Windows for Workgroups
  6. 3.11 today, without the wait for Windows 4.0.

  8.         SideBar offers you the power to organize your desktop the
  9. way you work.  It allows you to place folders within folders and
  10. also adds the capability to place folders and application icons
  11. directly on the desktop, something Windows lacked from its
  12. inception.  [See Figure 1]
  13.  
  14.         SideBar can replace your Program Manager shell and the
  15. Windows 3.11 Task Manager, or install as an application that still
  16. allows you to run Program Manager.  If you install it as a shell
  17. replacement, it displays a bar of icons along either side of your
  18. screen, hence the name SideBar [See Figure 2].  Inside this bar of
  19. icons, some familiar icons appear, such as the MS-DOS Prompt, Drive
  20. Listings, Print Manager, as well as some new icons.  Once nice
  21. feature is the Toolbar at the top of your windows, this allows you
  22. to enter DOS commands directly without the need to open the DOS Box.
  23. Along the bottom of the window appears a status bar to display
  24. system resources.

  26.         SideBar offers a Shadow feature that lets you keep a
  27. duplication of program files, folders, application listings, data
  28. files, or folder icons in multiple locations, without taking up
  29. valuable disk space.  It simply points to the source file instead of
  30. keeping information with each copy.  For instance you may want to
  31. keep a customer invoice form in several folders and on the desktop.
  32. SideBar will update all the shadows automatically if you make a
  33. modification to any other shadow.

  35.         SideBar installs as either a shell replacement for Program
  36. Manager or as a stand alone application.  If you decide not to use
  37. SideBar as your shell, there is a feature within SideBar called
  38. Synchronize, this will ensure you that any changes such as new
  39. program groups or icons you add to Program Manager will be reflected
  40. in SideBar when it is activated.  Any changes are accurately
  41. reflected in both SideBar and Program Manager, hence is it a
  42. bi-directional synchronization.

  44.         If you like the TrashCan in the Mac world then you will like
  45. SideBars "Recycler Icon." This icon is a drag-and-drop object,
  46. meaning you can pick up files, folders, directories, or drives and
  47. simply drag and drop them on the Recycler icon and it will delete
  48. those objects.  It has a built in safety feature that can be setup
  49. to ask for confirmation before deletion.  In fact, most of the areas
  50. within SideBar allow you to enable or disable confirmation requests
  51. for most commands or functions.

  53.         SideBar is not any different from most other "One-Dot 0"
  54. releases, meaning it is not without some faults.  It ran fine with
  55. Windows 3.11, but when I tried to run it with Windows for Workgroups
  56. 3.11, some errors occurred.  First, if you have the Microsoft
  57. Network services enabled your "StartUp" group will not be active
  58. when Windows is started.  Also, when you re-size a window and then
  59. exit Windows, the next time you enter SideBar it does not remember
  60. the last size or location of the windows you had open in a prior
  61. session.  There are some reported problems with people using
  62. "Virtual Desktop" video drivers and such, and errors within the
  63. SYSTEM.INI including "load=" commands.  Quarterdecks technical
  64. support people know of these problems and a maintenance patch should
  65. be available very soon.

  67.         If you want an "Object Oriented" desktop today, without
  68. waiting for the next release of Windows or switching to another GUI
  69. such as OS/2, I would suggest taking a look at SideBar for Windows.
